Joy Kloman

Joy Kloman references vintage photographs in her paintings to explore bittersweet nostalgic themes.

“The sourced photos are black and white, suggesting a history of days that have passed. I have added colour to my figurative paintings, creating tension between the past and the present. Passage of time is examined in these “freeze-frame” moments. Bicycles, birthdays, religious ceremonies, graduations, and weddings are all documented repeatedly. My multi-generational works of art are a collective journey through life. Capturing brief moments in time, my paintings suggest a sense of temporality. The foliage creeping over the image implies continuity as if we are peeking behind grandmother’s peeling wallpaper.”

Joy Kloman, a tenured associate professor at the University of Mississippi, supervised graduate and undergraduate painting programs. Professor Kloman also taught drawing in London. She earned her MFA from the University of Florida and BFA from Kansas City Art Institute.
