Alexandra Niculescu
Alexandra Niculescu is a Romanian artist living and working in Bucharest. Her work is inspired by Old Master paintings, referencing their colours and forms, which are imagined in a contemporary aesthetic. “Through careful observation of old master’s works, I reinterpret their aesthetics in a modern context. I begin my paintings with images from old masters, particularly from the Rococo period, characterised by elaborate and ornamental decorations. The juxtapositions between warm and cool colours contribute to the visual tension present in my paintings.“
Artist Q & A:
How did growing up surrounded by Bucharest’s historic architecture and heritage shape your journey as an artist?
Growing up on Bucharest’s Calea Victoriei Boulevard, surrounded by rich architecture and history, deeply influenced my artistic vision. The blend of old and new inspired me to explore contrasts in my work. The museums and palaces shaped my appreciation for art’s ability to combine Old Masters with contemporary life, enriched by Rococo’s luxury elements throughout childhood, teenage years and adulthood.
Can you share your process for reinterpreting historical aesthetics in a contemporary context?
In my work, I incorporate Rococo’s floral luxuriance into landscapes using gestural brush strokes. I start with palette knife layers and big brushes, adding delicate strokes later. Light plays a crucial role; blue skies and light symbolize hope and triumph. My narrative as a mother with thrombophilia during pregnancy is woven in through powerful symbols like the 300 injections I’ve had, representing life, truth, hope, and the incredible strength of women. By blending colours with contrast and overlapping many layers, I create a deep live experience for the viewer that evokes profound emotions.
