Noni Ruker

Noni Ruker is an Australian en plein air artist.

She says “I am a studio based and plein air artist. The Australian bush is my studio when I take week long retreats into nature, in national parks around Sydney or coastal locations along the NSW South Coast.

I have a studio in a stone cottage behind my home, which provides a wonderfully creative and reflective space for my practice. In my painting practice, I aim to establish a visceral connection between viewer and the natural world, evoking feelings of beauty, peace, and renewal. Central to my work is a celebration of nature’s complexity - places shaped over eons by the forces of nature, creating patterns of intricate beauty. “

Noni continues, “Central to my work is a celebration of nature’s complexity, capturing the raw energy of wild, untouched landscapes, the ancient, primordial essence of the sea, land, light, and atmosphere evoking immersion and retreat in which my field work and studio space are essential. The complexity of composition, the interplay of colour and distinctive brushstrokes are intentionally ambiguous, with explosive colour to engage the viewer in a deeply hypnotic dialogue between nature and the self—a visual journey through intricate worlds of light, shade, colour, and form.

My painting process involves a deep understanding of the place itself, achieved through observation of the light’s delicate play on form and surface. The resulting work is both instantly familiar and subtly abstract to heighten an emotional connection.”
