Ana Leal

Based in São Paulo, Ana Leal works primarily in photography. Inspired by minimalist traditions and impressionist painters, her images result in simple, geometric, and often abstract.

She shares, “I use the camera to engage, reflect, and share a feeling state. It is a conversation between myself, my senses, and the camera as a tool. It is my way of pushing the boundaries of photography and creating a visual journal. I also allow my images to interact with one another. Placing images next to each other creates a dialogue between the pieces leading to new narratives. Many can stand alone, however, the dynamics of layering them in diptychs, triptychs, or in a montage are integral to my practice.”

Leal is a Gold Award winner at the 2020 Tokyo International Foto Awards and the 15th Julia Margaret Cameron award winner both in the abstract category.
