Art titling & collection writing · Gita Joshi

A specialist titling and collection writing service for working artists

Language that positions
a practice, not just a painting

A title travels further than the work. It appears in press releases, exhibition notes, collection databases, and critical writing, often long after the conversation has moved on.

It is, quietly, one of the most consequential decisions an artist makes.

About Gita Joshi

I have spent years helping artists at the highest level articulate and contextualise their practice. I am, in some respects, something of a ghostwriter - though the ideas were always theirs. The language, the framing, the titles that seemed to arrive fully formed: that is the work I do.

What I bring is an artworld insider's understanding of how titles function, not just aesthetically, but strategically. How they place a body of work within a critical conversation. How they perform in catalogues and search. How they give a collector, a curator, or a journalist somewhere to stand.

Titles evoke. They position. They are the first sentence of every conversation about the work yet most artists title their work the way they sign it - quickly, and at the very end.

The Full Engagement

For artists preparing a collection and wanting the language to match the ambition of the work. We spend time together - across the collection and the broader arc of your practice - drawing out the ideas, preoccupations, and recurring threads you may not have named yet. From that, I develop titles that are precise, resonant, and genuinely yours: grounded in your thinking, not imposed upon it.

Each title is also considered for distinctiveness and searchability - how it will be remembered, how it performs in catalogues, and whether it stands apart.

  • Titles for up to ten works, developed through conversation and iterative review

  • Notes on each title: the thinking, the references, how to speak about the work with confidence

  • A collection statement for gallery submissions, PR, and institutional correspondence

  • Talking points for podcasts, interviews, and panel discussions

  • SEO and catalogue review: title uniqueness and search visibility
